Yoga for Every Body

Cindy has trained over 20 years in the method of Iyengar Yoga, a system of yoga developed by the late Yoga Master B.K.S. Iyengar. Iyengar Yoga is for everyone, including those who are brand new to yoga, or those who are seasoned practitioners. The Iyengar method is progressive and comprehensive so that students develop a safe and stable foundation before attempting more demanding work.

Classes initially emphasize standing poses and other poses gradually are added, including forward bends and backbends, twists, inversions, arm balances, and restorative poses. No two yoga classes are the same and Cindy takes particular care to sequence to each class in ways that will benefit her students.  Cindy is trained to adapt or modify poses for students regardless of their body or health issues so that everyone can experience the gifts that yoga brings.

Cindy is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) (Level 3).  CIYTs are held to extremely high standards, studying and training for years before undertaking the rigorous certification process.

As is expected of a serious student and teacher of yoga, Cindy maintains a strong home practice and studies regularly with senior teachers in the United States and from around the world.

Of the two aspects of asana, exertion of body and penetration of mind, the latter eventually is more important. Penetration of the mind is our goal, but in the beginning to set things in motion, there is no substitute for sweat. But once there is movement and then momentum, penetration can start. When effort becomes effortless, asana is at its highest level.

What Can I Expect in Cindy's Yoga Class?

  • Clear and precise instruction and demonstration of poses (as opposed simply to following along with the movements of teacher).

  • Attention to correct body alignment.

  • Emphasis on standing poses to develop strength, stamina, concentration, and body alignment.

  • The emphasis on quality of movement over quantity of movement.

  • Props such as blocks, blankets, bolsters, are used to allow students to experience freedom/comfort in a pose. These props help to educate certain parts of the body, to experience a fuller range of motion, to keep a student safe.

  • The safe, orderly progression of poses to maximize student’s yoga development and experience.

  • Care in the sequencing of poses for different effects, including bringing awareness to certain parts of the body, deepening poses, the introduction of new poses.

  • Individual correction and adjustment by the teacher when necessary.

  • Excellence in teaching born of decades of study and practice.

I first became a student of Cindy’s in the spring of 2017 and was immediately drawn to her teaching style and how she shared her knowledge and passion for the subject of Iyengar Yoga.  Prior to joining her class, I had limited experience with Iyengar Yoga but a definite interest in the method. Being Cindy’s student deepened my desire to learn and practice more because of her clear, concise and enthusiastic teaching.

As a teacher, she demonstrates her depth of knowledge of the subject of yoga by creating sequences and teaching in a way that inspires us to work hard and be completely absorbed in each pose.  I feel as though I learn something new in each class, either about a pose we’ve done many times such as Utthita Trikonasana or a new pose.  She continually comes back to the foundation and basic actions of each pose but does so in a way that seems new and fresh while reinforcing what we’ve previously learned.  She also creates sequences that build strength and flexibility and teach us to access poses or families of poses in different ways.  She shows a great understanding of her students, both encouraging them to do more while supporting them in their practice.

I’m extremely fortunate to continue to study with Cindy and would highly recommend her as a teacher of Iyengar Yoga.
